SMS verification at nebenan.de ensures that users are genuine and register only within one neighborhood. Each mobile phone number can be used only once; the phone number is cryptographically hashed and deleted after legal retention periods. Data processing is carried out in accordance with GDPR solely to protect the platform and users. Users receive a six-digit code via SMS to log in.
SMS verification is a method that we have newly introduced at nebenan.de but which is already used by many platforms and online marketplaces.
This ensures that a person is genuine (not a bot) and can register in only one neighborhood.
A mobile phone number can only be used once for verification, and our support team also performs a manual check. This way, we want to protect you and the neighborhoods.
We process your phone number exclusively for the purpose of verification.
For security reasons, we store a cryptographically hashed version of the phone number linked to your profile. This measure serves solely to prevent abuse, such as multiple registrations, and protects the integrity of our platform. The hash value is irreversible and does not allow reconstruction of your original phone number.
After the expiration of the statutory retention periods, this value is permanently deleted.
We base this procedure on our legitimate interests pursuant to Art. 6(1) sentence 1 lit. f GDPR to protect and ensure the IT security of our platform.
We strictly comply with data protection laws to ensure that your data is protected at all times.
How does it work?
Enter your phone number. We will send you a six-digit code via SMS (this may take a moment). By entering this code, you gain access to your neighborhood on nebenan.de.
Note for the web version: please note that the upper button “Enter access code” is for the ten-digit code that is sent by mail.
If you receive the message that your phone number is already in use, you can find more information in the article SMS Verification: My Phone Number Is Already Used, What Can I Do?
