Neighborhood Day is a nationwide day of action in May, initiated by the nebenan.de Foundation since 2018, that brings people together regardless of origin or age. Inspired by the French "Fête des Voisins," it promotes social community through local activities and celebrations. Events are collected on an action map, and free participation kits support the organization. More information is available at www.tagdernachbarschaft.com.
Neighborhood Day is a nationwide day of action for neighborly togetherness. Since 2018, the nebenan.de Foundation has called on people to organize small and large activities and celebrations in their neighborhoods on a Friday in May. Every year on this day of action, hundreds of thousands of people across Germany meet to get to know their neighbors, exchange ideas, and spend quality time together. Neighborhood Day brings people together regardless of origin, age, religion, or social affiliation, thereby sustainably strengthening social cohesion in our society.
On the Neighborhood Day website, neighbors enter their activities. These are then compiled on a nationwide action map. This way, interested parties can easily find registered events for more togetherness on and around Neighborhood Day. The foundation sends free participation kits to organizers upon request, which include, among other things, a pennant chain, a poster, postcards, and other materials.
The idea of Neighborhood Day originated in France and was initiated by the French sociologist Atanase Périfan. In 1999, he launched the initiative "Fête des Voisins" (Festival of Neighbors) in Paris to strengthen social relationships among residents of a neighborhood. The idea was for people to consciously take one day a year to meet their neighbors, exchange ideas, and promote community. The day quickly gained popularity in other European countries until the official "European Neighbors’ Day" was established in 2004. Since then, millions of people across Europe have celebrated neighborhood in May.
