Nebenan.de relies on a safe, respectful online neighborhood with binding rules such as the 3 Golden Rules and Terms of Use. The platform is not actively moderated; instead, moderators only review reported content. Neighbors are encouraged to resolve conflicts independently and report violations. The moderation team then decides on measures to ensure a trustworthy community.
To keep the online neighborhood a safe place for everyone: Our principles of moderation
The neighborhood is your personal environment—offline and online alike: it is especially important here that everyone feels safe, respected, and equal.
Your nebenan.de community is formed not by algorithms like on other platforms, but randomly through spatial proximity. This uniqueness offers you and your neighbors the chance for a wide variety of opinions, perspectives, and experiences.
Therefore, it is very important to us that all neighbors feel safe on our platform and are happy to contribute to the local community.
For this, we need clear rules that are binding for everyone, especially our
You can find more rules and guidelines from nebenan.de here.
Each of our 15,000 neighborhoods is only connected with its immediate surroundings. Our basic idea is that you as neighbors within your small community
- know best which content is appropriate and which is not,
- support and uphold our netiquette and guidelines,
- ideally resolve conflicts among yourselves, and
- report clear violations of our rules and guidelines to us.
That is why, unlike other forums, nebenan.de has no actively moderated platform. This means that the nebenan.de moderation team only reviews content reported by the neighborhood.
We therefore need your engagement in every respect to make the platform a safe and trustworthy online space for all neighbors.
The cooperation of responsible neighbors and our moderation proves successful: most posts and discussions on nebenan.de are friendly, helpful, and neighborly.
Our moderation team supports your engagement by
- personally reviewing all reported content,
- contextualizing the discussions,
- comparing reported content with our guidelines,
- making decisions on the extent to which it intervenes in a discussion (if necessary, issuing warnings, closing or deleting posts, or – in the case of repeated violations – blocking the access of the person concerned),
- informing the reporters about the decision as well as the reported persons in case of a violation, and
- answering questions about moderation if needed.
You may not always agree with a moderation decision – we understand that. What is important to us is this: Our rules are not an end in themselves. Our decisions serve to maintain a respectful neighborhood and a space where everyone feels safe.
If you have further questions about the basis on which we make our decisions, please take a look here at our guidelines in detail. Your constructive feedback helps us to continue on this path together.
