The concept of a swap party is simple: Everyone brings clothing or items and exchanges them without money for other goods. Organizers should choose a suitable location, invite neighbors, and ensure a good atmosphere. The party starts with an introduction round, clothes are sorted and tried on. Leftover clothing can be donated. This way, new favorite pieces and connections in the neighborhood are created.
New Treasures for Old Closet Leftovers
The concept of a swap party is very simple: Every guest brings clothing, accessories, decorations, or household items they no longer love and, in return, helps themselves to others' items. Swapping is done not for money, but item for item. Depending on how much space you have available and how many participants you want, you can host the party comfortably at your home or look for a suitable venue.
You can read Katharina’s story in the nebenan Magazin: What to do with all this stuff? The Swap Party as a Solution!
“Numbers and email addresses were exchanged, new meetings arranged, and I think everyone went home not only with new clothing items (to my delight, each of us had a new favorite piece), but also with the feeling of having found a few new friends.”
Katharina from Stuttgart
How to organize a swap party:
-
Find a suitable location and prepare it:
- Depending on the size of the event, choose a suitable location for the swap party. If your home doesn’t have enough space, you can ask clubs or public facilities if you can use their rooms. Maybe one of your neighbors has space and would like to host the swap party at their home?
- When it comes to clothing, a few mirrors, enough ways to display clothes (hangers, clothing racks, ladders...), and rooms where people can try on clothes are definitely helpful!
-
Invite your neighbors:
- Create an event in your neighborhood on nebenan.de. You can learn how to do this in our help portal.
- It’s best to allow a bit more lead time. This way, all participants have the opportunity to thoroughly search their home and wardrobe for unworn and unused clothing items.
- Adding a photo to the event will attract even more neighbors’ attention.
- To avoid disappointments at clothing swap parties, it’s important that several participants wear approximately the same clothing size. This way, everyone can join the swapping!
-
Create a good atmosphere:
- Especially if the swapping might take a while, drinks and snacks are always welcome. How about everyone bringing a little something? This way, you can combine the pleasant with the enjoyable! By preparing some seating, your neighbors can also take breaks from swapping.
- With pleasant music, swapping becomes even easier!
-
Let’s get started: The swap party can begin!
- Especially if you don’t all know each other yet, an introduction round at the beginning is a great idea.
- You can also simply sort the clothing items by category, which makes everything a bit clearer!
- Browse, try on, and maybe share a story or two about the pieces you brought.
- If several people fall in love with the same item, there are different ways to resolve it: For example, it could go to the person who has chosen fewer items so far, or everyone rates how much they want the item on a scale from 1 to 5. Sometimes, it’s also just clear after trying on who it suits best.
- Try on clothing pieces you normally wouldn’t pick up in a store. Let yourself be surprised!
-
Donate the remaining clothes:
- If not every brought item finds a new owner, you can simply donate these. This way, no one has to take their unloved clothes back home.
-
Share your experience with others:
- Tell your neighbors on nebenan.de about your clothing swap party! This will inspire others in the neighborhood and you can plan the next event right away!
